A Rain-Soaked Drive in the West

Apart from a couple days of good weather while traveling in the Owens Valley, this winter trip along through the west proved to be the wettest of memory. Rain and snow accompanied me on the first days - I left Zion National Park only for the park to be closed the next day due to rain-induced washouts and flooding. Travel did not improve as I moved northward, with snow slowing travel on even the interstate highways. When it wasn’t raining or snowing, a thick overcast covered the western US. Not at all the weather I was hoping for – but you make the best with what you have. Though at times an ark would have been handy.

Tucson to Yellowstone and Points In-Between

Recently had to burn a couple of weeks of time off from work or lose it, so I took the opportunity to drive up to Yellowstone National Park, through Colorado and Wyoming on the way there, and down through Utah on the way back. Seven national parks were visited on the trip: Mesa Verde, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Canyonlands, and Arches. Out of over 3500 photos taken, here are the best ones to enjoy.

All Souls Procession

Started in 1990 as a way for a local artist to pay tribute to her recently passed father, the All Souls Procession has grown into a two-mile human-powered procession involving more than 20,000 participants. It is a mixture of old European and Latin traditions, in form most closely resembling the processions of Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos. The procession allows participants to pay homage to deceased loved ones, friends, ancestors, pets, and others.

Taos Ski Valley Pond Skimming

At the close of every season, the Taos Ski Valley holds its annual Pond Skimming contest. What’s Pond Skimming? In this case, a 100 foot-long pool is constructed at the bottom of the ski slope, and competitors attempt to ski across the pond reaching the other side. If you’re in Taos on the closing day of ski season, then it’s a must to watch.

Carlsbad Caverns - 2009

Carlsbad Caverns is one of my favorite caves, in that the park staff gives photographers close-to-full reign of the place as long as you stay on the path. Other caves have rules that are far more restrictive, limiting the equipment one can bring into the cave or banning photography all together. While the reasons for the restrictions are typically to protect the cave and prevent other visitors from tripping over equipment in the dark conditions, it limits the opportunities for responsible photographers.

Last night found me once again out in the middle of nowhere on a Saturday night. No wonder my friends think of me as a socialite. This time, I was out on a trip of curiosity, to see, and possible photograph, my first night rocket launch. The Southern Arizona Rocketry Association here in Tucson was having their two-day “Desert Heat” rocketry extravaganza, including a night launch. Since I’m a fan of both explosives and neat photo opportunities, I made the drive out to Avra Valley to watch the event.

Perhaps I could have chosen a better title, given that this latest journey lasted three weeks, crossed seven states, and added another 5700 miles to the truck's odometer. All totaled 2035 photos, the best 49 are here for your viewing, a series of images chronicling a journey into what would become one of the greatest winter storms the west has seen in some time.

San Xavier Del Bac Mission

The White Dove of the Desert, San Xavier Del Bac, has been here long before there was a United States - Father Eusebio Francisco Kino first visited the site in 1692. In 1700, the foundation of the first church was laid nearby. The present church was built from 1783-1797, and is acclaimed as one of the best examples of mission architecture in the United States.

For the last few years an effort has been ongoing to restore the exterior of the church, which has suffered from the desert environment. Only recently did the scaffolding come off the west tower.

Many of the places I had intentions of visiting long before the trip started, other places I had been to before and wanted to revisit, yet there were other places I found simply be accident - traveler's luck if you will.
